A Note From The Author

The hardest thing about preparing this website was the research of course. I noticed in the scholarly articles that I did find, that most of them stated there was limited research on representation of transgender women of color in the mass media, and the effects of these representations on people’s attitudes toward transgender individuals. I found it hard to find good peer reviewed data on transgender people period, and it was even harder to find information on transgender women of color. My journey started when I watched the first episode of Pose. It was the opening scene when Damon was being kicked out by his parents. I guess it bothered me so much because I always thought parents would love you no matter what. Pose was the first show that I saw a transgender person, and they weren’t the subject of a joke. I was always so nonchalant of their struggles, and experiences. I never participated in transphobic rhetoric, but I have never said anything opposing to it either. I never chose to educate myself on the experiences of transgender individuals until I knew some of their stories. Pose made this possible for me.  This blog is just a starting point. I am not a transgender woman, so my case is based of research I conducted not experience. This website will expand as I continue to educate myself on this marginalized group. I can empathize with transgender women, but I will never be able know what it is like to be one. I recommend people seeking out their own authentic representations.  I hope this page is a starting point for someone to take the time to learn about their experiences, and to want to change the narrative around transgender women of color. I am speaking on the behalf of transgender women of color as an advocate. This website does not necessarily displays the views of the entire community.
